If you are like me, you've spent more money on travel, gifts, and clothes for weddings the past few years than I've stuck in my IRA. I'm not going to lie, I wish I could get a refund on the marriages that lasted less than two years. You ever been there? Regardless, dressing for a wedding always is a challenge. Some weddings will come with a dress code (garden party, black tie), but most of the time it's up to you to decode. So, what exactly are you expected to wear to a wedding?
The Rules Are Changing
We all know to avoid white. It's the bride's day, so you shouldn't stand her up. But what do you have for options? The majority of weddings happen during summer, so you'll want something that is comfortable, not too hot, and packs well. I fully believe that LuLaRoe is the answer to all of your problems. They have multiple different options to help you dress for any venue you might encounter. The clothes pack easily (hello, wrinkle-free fabrics!), so they have become my go-to any time I have to travel. But, here are some rules on what you will want to avoid wearing:
- No denim. It's too casual no matter how low-key the event is.
- No holes. Do I really need to explain this one?
- Avoid white, off-white, and light pastels. You don't want to compete with the bride.
- No cargo shorts. It's on the same level as denim.
So, let's cover some of the situations you might encounter when preparing for wedding season.
The Formal Wedding
This one is easy. You've been given an idea of what to wear. You know you need to dress up. But how the hell do you look like a million bucks and stay comfortable in the heat of summer? My answer is the Deanne dress. The fabric on top is form of crepe that really breathes. I'm not lying when I say that you will not overheat wearing this dress. And the skirt? It's so incredibly flattering. I love this wrap dress, and am always looking for a reason to wear it. While this dress was a limited edition item to the elegant capsule of 2017, I would not be one bit surprised if this dress made an additional appearance somewhere down the line.
The Casual Wedding
Even if the wedding is super casual, you should still dress up for it. Let me repeat something I said before. Men, NO JEANS. Ever. Denim is just too casual for a wedding. I know, the rules are changing, but denim is still too casual. So, what do you wear? I'm a big fan of the Carly dress paired with a Joy vest. You can dress a Carly up or down based on your accessories and shoes. The Carly also is really flowy, so you can fit a full meal underneath her without worrying if it's showing. Since it's also really flowy, you will stay cooler on those hot days.
The Beach or Destination Wedding
As I'm writing this, we're getting 18-30″ of snow tonight into tomorrow, so I can only dream of a beach wedding. However, if I were to attend a beach wedding, I'd definitely wear LuLaRoe. It's comfy and easy! Depending on where the wedding is being held, I would either wear a maxi skirt or a flowy dress, like this Nicole. It's super flattering and moves beautifully with a breeze! These items won't take up a ton of room in your suitcase, and you can wear them back at home! I'm all about versatility.
When in Doubt, Overdress
If you're not sure what to wear, it's easier to be overdressed than under-dressed. You can always make a dress more casual by taking off any accessories. I love the Amelia dress for many reasons, but the main reason is that it has pockets. I always worry about setting down a purse and losing it, so pockets have become my go-to answer. With the way the box pleats are set on the Amelia, you can't tell that there is anything in your pockets. If you wear heels with the Amelia, it's dressier. Throw on some sandals and you have a more casual look. But I will always lean towards overdressing to make sure I never feel out of place.
